Much of ministry work in remote areas of Africa is composed of mastering logistical challenges. Perhaps the most difficult challenge is in the area of transportation. PPF President, Brad Phillips, once spoke to the Africa Correspondent for a UK news site, who quipped that out of all the countries he had visited in Africa, Sudan was one of the few places where one could still get stuck!
He’s right.
Half the year, most of the roads in South Sudan are either under water or a muddy mess. This means that for most people in need of emergency assistance, help is sometimes a world away even though it may be a few miles away as the crow flies.

Another big challenge to logistics is security. Everything from cross-border bombing missions by the regime in Khartoum to roving bands of “militias” armed and funded by terrorists can close large areas at a moment’s notice.
PPF recently received a distress call from a community that was surrounded on all sides by swamp. No vehicles could get through and even the airstrip was flooded. A malaria outbreak had already claimed the lives of a dozen children, and the PPF clinic was out of medicine. Malaria medication is cheap and effective, but people die everyday in South Sudan because they have no access to these meds.
That is why PPF has a Transportation and Logistics (T & L) fund. This ministry program is integral to everything we do to engage in active compassion for the persecuted.
